A Mansfield teacher has been busted for shoplifting. Police say Deborah Ludlow was caught trying to steal from Kohl's department store in Fort Smith Wednesday. Cops say she stuffed some clothes, and even a couple of rugs, into her purse and tried to make a break for it. Ludlow now faces misdemeanor shoplifting charges.

Okay funny but...

Roads are mainly paid for by taxes on commercial diesel. Why? because semi-trucks cause more wear to the road. Why? because they weigh tons. Ever seen a bicycle lane that was concave at a redlight from the weight of the idling bicycles? If bicycles were the only vehicles roads would cost less to build and maintain. Leave the heavy cargo for the rails.

Next, in all my years of riding on sidewalks, and running red lights I've never ran over a dog or caused an accident, but I've done both of those things in a car.

Nick is right, and that amazing video is embedded above. Feast your eyes, mutants! I asked Nick to talk with us a little more about how the video came to be, and he very kindly obliged. He continues,

I couldn't be more excited that you might post something about our video, because, actually, to be completely honest, you are responsible for pairing Death Cab for Cutie with Walter Robot in a cupid sort of way, whether you know it or not.

Last November you posted an item on Boing Boing tv about the Walter Robot video for Gnarls Barkley's Mystery Man and when I saw that clip, I knew that Walter Robot was the answer. I'm not sure I would have discovered Walter Robot without your help.

Wow. I'm a massive fan of Death Cab, as are my fellow bloggers and Boing Boing video production colleagues, so -- Nick, you just blew my/our minds. Thank you! He continues:

During our last album, entitled Plans, I got frustrated with the amount of sometimes suffocating input that bands and labels felt they needed to give to filmmakers making videos, so along with my friend, director Aaron Stewart-Ahn, we came up with a concept to have 11 different filmmakers direct a video for each song on our album. The set up was simple, a lower budget with complete creative control. We held the line that no matter what you make as a filmmaker we will stand behind as a band. The "Directions" project as it was called turned out beautifully and the videos that were made surpassed anything we could have hoped for. So it made sense to keep this hands off philosophy for the videos for our newest album Narrow Stairs as well.
After seeing the Mystery Man video on Boing Boing (and other Walter Robot shorts, too) I just had a hunch that Walter Robot's style would be a perfect fit for our song "Grapevine Fires." When I first spoke with Bill and Christopher, I really had no specific direction in mind. I told them that I felt like we would have to match the lyrics somehow, without being too literal and that I really wanted their animation style to remain fragile and delicate amidst such a tragic song. At first I was worried about how they would walk the line that the song holds.

Intuit Accuses Mint Of False Claims

Intuit, the maker of money management software, Quicken, is accusing an emerging competitor, Mint, of making false claims. Mint claims that it has gone from 3,000 new users a day to 850,000 users in a matter of months.

So Mint.com exaggerates claims about their popularity. What company doesn't, and furthermore who gives a shit. Their unique hits were not a factor in my signing up for the service, and the fact that there are 400,000 less unique visitors than they claim, doesn't impact my use one bit. I find Mint to be an incredibly useful site which I'm sure Daya Baran would agree with if he/she had actually *used* it before calling it a "fad". The fact that Intuit is splitting hairs like this inspires even less respect than I had after my many attempts at getting Quicken to sync with my several credit card and bank accounts, something that Mint does effortlessly. Sounds like sour grapes to me Intuit!

Okay I like Fallout and the whole "Great War" story is fascinating, but they should have done their research better when it came to the Commonwealths. Arkansas and Texas would never unite. Oklahoma... maybe. I definitely approve of the Californian split from Socal. We definitely have more in common with Oregon *coughs* Portland, and Washington *coughs* Seattle, but Idaho and Montana would get along better.

But if they were dividing states, they might as well divide AR diagonally southwest, to northeast. SW AR has more in common with Louisiana and Mississippi than Missouri, or Oklahoma.

Out of touch. That's what we all are. People driving Lexus' from their subdivision to their jobs as accountants, are out of touch with people riding dirty huffy bicycles from their tiny low-income housing projects to their job washing dishes. Single moms raising kids are out of touch with executives with nannies.

Cutting taxes on the rich may well drive the economy, but after nearly a decade of such "economy building" what has the average American seen? A strong economy may eventually mean opportunities for the working class, but it immediately benefits the rich. Obama's plan immediately benefits the poor, and will likely benefit us all through a better educated, fairly privileged, and satisfied work force.

Neither side understands the other, but I like to think that somewhere in the give and take struggle of democracy, a balance is struck. For a time the rich will rule and pillage the social programs of the poor. Once they've been sufficiently exploited, the proletariat is motivated to take them back.

It's likely only a matter of time before Obama's policies give birth to wasteful bureaucracies. Over regulation is bound to occur. But this is the kind of nation building we need. These are the programs that the average person wants. The average person *WANTS* free healthcare. The few who can afford their own have had their say for decades. The few who wanted a war with Iraq, had their way. The few who would rather see our planet shrivel rather than have our factories burdened with regulations had their way. Now's the time for someone else to have their say, and right or wrong, I figure they're about to have it.

It is too easy to make fun of the people who packed Room 400 in San Francisco's City Hall to stop American Apparel from opening a store on Valencia Street in the Mission District last week.

They are not serious people. They live in a world where facts like 27 vacant storefronts on Valencia Street and 9.3 percent unemployment statewide and nearly 600,000 jobs lost nationally last month do not matter.

I'm disappointed to hear that American Apparel was denied their plans to open a store on Valencia St. Don't get me wrong, I'm no more eager for the throngs of flatbrim-hat wearing bridge-and-tunnel mallrats to descend from the Haight. I cringe at the thought of what the neighborhood's hipsters would be able to accomplish with a ready source of day-glow hoodies, and tights. But banning them made next to no sense. One chain store would not be the beginning of the end, and even if it were to have had the effect of allowing more businesses to open on Valencia st, I simply don't see what's wrong with that. It would change the neighborhood, but I'd bet that the snobs that railed the hardest against AA were not working class latinos, and yet somehow they manage to call the Mission their neighborhood. Avoidance of change unless if behooves you is a common thing though.

Aloha, I am a 43 yr old mom, and will be traveling to san francisco, for my daughters reconstruction surgery around March 9th. I don't know anyone in the area, and looking into lodging and a contact to help me get to and from California Pacific Medical Center during the duration of her stay. My 20 year old daughter, in June 2008 almost lost her life to a flesh eating bacteria after having her wisdom teeth removed, and lost her bottom lip as a result of it. Doctors in Hawaii do not have the expertise to help her, so we are seeking Doctors in California. We have been here at the end of 2008, and consulted with 3 doctors. We have chose one of them, Dr. Rudy Buntic, at the Buncke's Clinic. We have a surgery date tentatively set for March 9th and may need to stay up to 2 weeks.

I'm a longtime user of both Tumblr, and Posterous. Posterous made it easy to multi-post to several blogs at once via email. This made it great for long form blog entries since I wasn't married to Blogger, LiveJournal, or WordPress. It also worked with emailed images and would post them to Flickr, and Facebook, but now Ping.fm does that trick, and supports more sites.

My social media/sharing/reposting policy is to use the site that brings me the content. So if I see something on Facebook, I'll reshare it on Facebook, and if I see something on Digg, I'll digg it. But when a site doesn't provide me any way to share it's content with my friends, it's been Tumblr's job to step in and pick up the slack. Tumblr lets you select individual images, videos, even blocks of text to post to your Tumblr. The video sharing only worked for YouTube, but allowed you to paste an embed code from anywhere, which I found to work well with just about any swf file. But there are formatting issues. Sometimes I can't compose a coherent caption to my Tumblr posts because the links don't work, or the quote source is ambiguous.

I'll give Posterous' new feature a fair shake. I don't really care what site my social sharing flak lives on anymore, just as long as it gets picked up by FriendFeed, and all the other aggregators, and gives me all the tools I need to capture content from all over the web and re-post it with my own comments.

I moved to San Francisco from middle America over two years ago. There was a lot about the City that was new and interesting to me like the tall buildings, the taxis, and the bike messengers. But one thing that has never stopped fascinating me is the homelessness. When I first arrived here I was typically disturbed by the dirty and often desperate looking people sleeping on mats of cardboard, drinking alcohol from tiny single shot bottles, and urinating on the sidewalk. Many seem belligerent and mean when they've had a particularly rough night, but some have great a great sense of humor and seem to want your smile as much as they want your leftovers. Some will beg for change with signs, their arms tucked in their thin t-shirts as they shiver in the San Francisco mist. Some sell Street Sheets at busy intersections for dollar bills. But there's one thing they all have in common; they will look you in the eye with the most sincere kind of gratitude you've ever experienced as they shake your hand. They need whatever money you can give them, but what they seem to need more is the acknowledgement of another person. They need one of the hundreds of busy people walking past their cardboard box to stop, say hello, and ask them what their name is and how they are doing, instead of hurrying past avoiding eye contact. They need respite from the dehumanizing shame of living on the margins, in vacant lots, and deserted alleys. They need to feel the warmth of a human hand in theirs. I believe that, and I feel the same need from time to time. I don't know how to help them improve their life. I doubt most of them want help aside from what ever rations they can scrape together themselves, and I understand that. But everyone deserves to be looked at like a human.

Not to worry my family and friends, but I've received a couple of email threats this week. Someone using an anonymous encrypted email gateway called http://www.hushtools.com has been accusing one of my friends of theft, and threatening to hurt me or Celeste if I don't identify him and where he's from. Being a veteran netizen, I don't take this kind of thing seriously. I know that anyone can pretend to be anything online, and that anonymity allows the most harmless punks to play bad ass for a day. Nevertheless, threatening someone is a crime, even when the threats are most likely coming from a slighted ex-girlfriend looking for vindication. Whoever she is I give her points for dramatic effect. However I'm certain my friend didn't steal a car let alone $100k. Someone has watched "No Country for Old Men" a few too many times. This is the real world, not a crime drama. I'm sorry that he broke your heart, but there are plenty of fish in the sea. Move on.

It's unfortunate that this person is using the personal information that I share here on my blog and lifestream to threaten my girlfriend and I. People have warned me that someday I'll have a stalker, and in a way they were right. However, I maintain that transparency is the only policy. Tomorrow some crazy driver could mow me down on my way to work, but if I get a picture of his license plate he won't get away with it, and I have plenty of cameras on me at all times. So again, I don't expect I'll ever get the pleasure of meeting this prick in person, but if I ever do I just have this to say; get ready to be Internet famous!

I'm still kinda miffed about getting kicked off fluther. All I did was use the F-word at someone who used it at me, but only after I had flagged them and several other hostile "jellies". All this because I had the audacity to challenge drivers who claimed they were incapable of bicycling. Last night while the election results were coming in, my girlfriend and I were riding our bicycles to 14th and Valencia. There was an apt showing, and the location is good for us. There were no pictures but we hoped there would be a backyard for the cat, and enough space to have friends over. Humble requirements for an apt that would cost us $1800 a month. When we got there it looked like a party had just let out. There were about thirty people there and when they all went in it was madness. The place was huge and there was a backyard. The bathroom was disgusting, and the kitchen was crummy. When celeste finally got to talk to the realtor she said it would go to whomever got them a check first.

We went home and tried to figure out where we would get $4500 by the morning, and if it would even matter what with so many people vying for the place. But together we had the money though $2000 of it was in euros. We'd get up early and take a taxi from Bart to the Richmond where the office and bank were. We'd just need to get there before everyone else.

We walked in at about 8:30am and the lady at the desk was expecting us having recieved all our paper work by email. No one else had shown up and all we had to do is wait till 9:00 for the bank to open so we could exchange her euros and get a cashiers check.

When we got back to the realtors they were calling us to tell us that someone else had come in and they had turned them away. We had bad news though, the bank of America was no longer exchanging currency so we on had half the check. We asked if they could just take the $2000 till we could get the rest but she said it wouldn't be fair to other applicants. I'll tell ya what's not fair; making dozens of people scramble to get you a check without making any commitment that you'll accept it when they get there.

We tried a few other banks but none would exchange, and eventually we learned that they had called back the second people, as we sulked back in the cab they called to let us know we had left celeste's helmet. Not wanting to go all the way back I got out of the cab and went back to get it.

As I waited at the muni stop I leaned agaist a pole covered in wet green paint. There was no warning sign. My favorite leather jacket is kinda ruined. I can not WAIT to write this yelp review!

I wrote you last Wednesday after 4 days of house raids, mass arrests, tear gas, concussion grenades, and a growing array of "police-state" measures had been deployed against protesters at the Repubican National Convention in St. Paul. Worldcantwait.org is pulling together the whole picture, and Democracy Now covered many of the outrages. But I am still trying to adequately describe the suppression of speech that occured last week.

This thought, said to me in the chaos last week, sticks in my head. "If you have a doctrine of pre-emptive war on whole countries, you need pre-emptive suppression of protest at home." The $50 million operation run by Homeland Security and the Secret Service had a lot in common with how the US military views citizens in the Middle East: if they're on the street when we don't want them there, they are terrorists.

Thursday September 4, as the Republicans swaggered into the Xcel Center for their orgy of McCain love, a few hundred peace activists gathered on the lawn outside the Minnesota capitol, about a mile away. Most were sitting in the grass, listening to bands and speeches for a permitted rally. At 4:05 pm, 8 police on bikes sprinted into the crowd, threw their bikes down, and grabbed two men sitting on the lawn. Press and protesters surrounded them, and within 4 minutes, dozens of police of horses and riot police drove a wedge through the crowd, as cars and an ambulance drove onto the lawn, and the men were extracted and disappeared into cars. It was not impossible to know why they were taken, but it seemed to me the exercise was practice in crowd control, intimidation and provocation.

40 minutes later, a loudspeaker was driven by police onto the lawn, drowning out the program on the stage. Police announced that the permit was over at 5:00 pm, and anyone on the lawn would be arrested. The crowd tried to leave together, marching toward the Xcel Center, but was forced by police onto a a bridge across the freeway, surrounded at both ends. Bulldozers with blades lowered were moved into place at one end, looming over the crowd, as if to sweep them up. Dump trucks blocked off streets. Police pulled on their gas masks. 400 people were arrested that night, bringing total arrests to over 800, including 102 outside the Rage Against the Machine concert (a wonderfully great show!) where police were a mile deep, and looking for any pretext to arrest.

Defending the people arrested in St. Paul will be the responsibility of this whole movement. While the crinminal charges are state of Minnesota, the direction comes from the federal government. These are charges criminalizing political activity.
Democracy Now reports, "In St. Paul, Ramsey County prosecutors have formally charged eight members of the group RNC Welcoming Committee with conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism. The eight activists are believed to be the first persons ever charged under the 2002 Minnesota version of the federal PATRIOT Act. The activists face up to seven-and-a-half years in prison. According to the National Lawyers Guild, the criminal complaints filed by the Ramsey County Attorney do not allege that any of the defendants personally engaged in any act of violence or damage to property. Instead, authorities are seeking to hold the eight defendants responsible for acts committed by other individuals during the opening days of the Republican National Convention."

CHEERS to IVAW! Inside the convention, Adam Kokesh interrupted McCain's acceptance speech about 20 seconds after he began, with a banner reading "McCain Votes Against Veterans" and "You Can't Win an Occupation". After 3 seconds, the hall erupted in chants of "USA!" drowing out McCain. The Iraq Veterans Against the War were all over Denver and St. Paul, demanding that the war and occupation be ended. I'm currently reading "the Martian chronicles" by ray Bradbury. A great scifi collection of short stories set in a 1940s view of outer space exploration. It's a great book, but very pessimistic about humanity. This morning I arrived at chapter 2006 and earth was seen from mars exploding in an atomic war by a overly optimistic hot dog vendor who had built a stand on what he hoped would become a city filled with earthling pioneers.

Here in the real 2008 we have yet to destroy Los Angeles, London, and all of the Australian continent with accidental atomic bomb detonations, yet we still see this as a bleak time. People are saying that the recent economic crisis is the end of American dominence of the global economy. They may be right and while many will suffer a lowered quality of life here in America, I look around me here in downtown San francisco, at the over passes and the giant glass buildings and I wonder if maybe we haven't been living beyond our means anyway.

I read that soon humanity's conspimption will outpace the earth's capacity to produce. It's a sad day, but it's a calculation no doubt based on a statistic and as they say there are three kinds of lies; lies, damn lies and statistics. Perhaps we will find ways of squeezing yet more water form this rock, perhaps we'll discover new more efficient methods of production. Maybe the market will take care of us by making the cost of non renewable resources cost prohibitive. Or hell maybe we'll go to mars.

I want to agree with the pessimists, I want to do what's right for future generations, but I have to trust this herd to stop before it stampedes off a cliff, because we have avoided worse fates. It is afterall 2008.
